Although Roe v. Wade was overturned on June 24, 2022, the fight for life continues, and today many thousands of people braved the cold, snow and ice to march at the nation’s capital in Washington, D.C. for the 51st time.
The purpose of this year’s March for Life was about creating a world where the beauty and dignity of every human life is valued and protected. The idea is to create a culture that embraces life and helps those in crisis. And to that end, this year’s theme is: With Every Women, For Every Child.
The theme is meant to emphasize that being pro-life isn’t just about protecting the baby, but also the mother, and giving hope to all.
To this end there were many wonderful speakers, including Antonio de Mello from Brazil who adopted 46 children with disabilities. Many of these children were unwanted and abused, but Antonio saved them and gave them hope, and now he serves as an example for others to follow.
Then there was Jean Marie Davis. She was trafficked in 33 states from the age of two to twenty-nine, was hooked on crystal meth, had no job, no home, no hope, no life, didn’t want to give birth and wanted to die. But when she went to a pregnancy center, one woman said she knew a man named Jesus. And because of her testimony, Jean gave her life to Jesus, and then she became involved in saving other women with unwanted pregnancies and giving them hope.
Throughout the day I learned of horrific situations that eventually resulted in something good. There was a group of women marching, and they explained that their mothers had been raped, but rather than having them aborted, they were given up for adoption, went to loving homes, and now they’re able to tell their story of how they’re alive, and that they didn’t deserve to die for the sins of their father.
The pro-life vs. pro-choice debate is an ongoing political issue, and there are many difficult issues for both sides to face, but it is my hope that our society begins to value human life, right from the beginning.
