Genetics is an exciting field for creationists, and this is because the evidence is consistent with the creation account described in Genesis, and, further, evolution is becoming less viable with every new discovery. In fact, I’d suggest evolution has long been refuted. The more we learn, the more evolution is exposed as a modern-day myth. Seriously.
Sadly, since Darwin published his book, Origin of Species, in 1859, many Christians lost their faith due to evolution, which is in direct conflict with the Bible’s origin of man. Others compromised their faith, incorporating evolution and long ages into their worldview. According to Genesis, however, God created animals to reproduce after their kind, and he created man from the dust of the ground. Therefore, if the Bible is true, then we aren’t related to apes. And neither is all life be related to a single common ancestor.
Today’s post goes a long way toward refuting some of evolution’s most cherished dogma. Donny Budinsky and Matt Nailor discuss heavy topics- like the DNA similarity between apes and humans, mutation rates and population growth. And while these topics get technical, if you’ve heard evolutionists push them, this is a great place to get answers. Here’s my summary:
In this episode of Creation Today, host Eric Hovind begins with the topic of genetic similarity between humans and chimps. Evolutionists believe humans and apes shared a common ancestor about 6 million-years ago. Therefore, they need to convince us that humans and apes are related. So, after comparing human and chimp DNA, they declared we are 98-99 percent similar. This stat is misleading, but it led to a successful indoctrination campaign, convincing many that evolution must be true.
But here’s the problem with their conclusion. Going back to 2010, scientists had Y-chromosome sequencing data and were aware that humans and chimps are very dissimilar. Then, in 2017, a study was published concluding that humans and apes were only 35 percent similar when considering gene content, architecture, and size differences. This is the opposite of what evolutionists predicted. Now we have complete Y chromosome sequencing data for humans, chimps, gorillas, bonobos, and orangutans, and the results of a 2024 study indicates that chimps are only 26.2 percent the same as humans. All this was unexpected and is a direct refutation of evolutionary theory.
For creationists, however, we reject common ancestry, and the genetic data supports a separate creation. Evolutionists have been forced to concede that these enormous differences are “puzzling,” to say the least. In fact, the scientific literature notes that the similarity between chimps and humans is the same as the similarity between humans and chickens, even though evolutionists believe we split off from chickens 310 million years ago! Thus we can see contradictions in evolutionary theory. It just doesn’t work.
So what about mutation rates? Well, evolutionists believe humans split from chimps about 7-million-years ago and evolved in Africa about 300,000 years ago. But creationists believe we descended from Adam and Eve a little more than 6,000 years ago, and then Noah’s three sons and their wives around 4,000 years ago. These are our two competing worldviews to compare.
Now scientists found 24 fixed substitutions (a type of mutation where one nucleotide is swapped for another) in mitochondria, and, in 1979, after applying evolutionary assumptions, they calculated a very slow mutation rate of about 2% per million years. Evolutionists predicted one substitution every 300- 600 generations.
However, when the first empirical study was done in 1993, the evolutionary model failed to match the predictions. As slow as it was, the mutation rate proposed by evolutionists was far too fast. In reality, there was one substitution every 25 generations. This means the most recent common ancestor for all European people lived about 5,000 years ago. This matches the biblical timeline as determined by numerous historians, including James Usher, and coincides perfectly with the Tower of Babel event. This data confirms creationist predictions.
As we can see, evolutionists stretched the substitutions to make their theory work. They had to make up their own mutation rate to slow it down, manipulating the evidence to fit the data.
Of course evolutionists disputed the results. But every time a new study was produced, the results supported a biblical timeline rather than evolution. A 1997 study, for instance, found a substitution rate of 1 every 32.7 years, placing Mitochondrial Eve at 6,500 years ago, exactly what creationists predict, but 20 times higher than predicted by evolutionists.
Other studies in 1998, 2000, 2001, 2004, 2005, 2012 produced similar results. Critics conceded, “Mitochondrial DNA appears to mutate much faster than expected, prompting new DNA forensics procedures and raising troubling questions about the dating of evolutionary events.”
The mention of new DNA forensic procedures is most notable. Consider, the FBI uses this data in the field. Evolutionists are fond of claiming that nothing in science makes sense without evolution, and they’ll mention a list of scientific disciplines, like biology, geology, genetics, paleontology, medicine, etc. Of course their claim is false. The opposite is true, and here’s the evidence. The FBI actually uses the same mutation rates to conduct forensics as predicted by creation and rejects the rate demanded by evolution. So evolutionary theory, once again, fails and is rejected when tested against real-world empirical data. Evolution is a myth.
The topic of human population growth was another good discussion. Creationist’s use a population rate of 2.6- 2.3 percent, doubling the population every 150 years following the flood, and we get to 8 billion people, even when counting for wars, famine, and other factors. Population growth calculators confirm this. But evolutionists have more problems. They incorporate at least 5 mass extinction events, keeping the human population near zero the last 150,000 years. This is a paradox for evolutionists because there is no known people group where such a growth rate exists in the real world. In addition, inbreeding would lead to a quick extinction.
Check out the entire interview. It’s about 30 minutes long if you’re not a subscriber, and is definitely worth your time if you want to learn more about these topics.
My next post will be a continuation with Donny and Matt discussing endogenous retroviruses (ERVs), pseudogenes and chromosome fusion. Come back for these hot topics!
