Creation Science and Genetics: Part II

Part 1 of this two-part series covered Y chromosome sequencing, DNA similarity between chimps and humans, mutation rates, and population growth. Evolutionists have long claimed that genetics provides evidence for evolution, however, the latest data in this field falsifies evolutionary predictions and refutes evolution. And as it turns out, the science supports creation in all scientific disciplines, including genetics.

This post specifically examines endogenous retroviruses (ERVs), which, according to evolutionists, are one of the best lines of evidence for evolution. This post gets technical, but the attached video by Donny Budinsky will help anyone who wants to understand how the evidence better supports creation. Here’s a quick summary.

First it’s important to know what ERVs are and why evolutionists claim this is evidence for evolution. ERVs are bits of DNA within the genome found in both animals and humans. Evolutionists believe they are “remnants of past viral infections” that occurred millions of years ago in a human ancestor, and, therefore, are evidence of common descent. So right away evolutionists have made an unwarranted assumption about the distant past that cannot be verified by observational evidence. No one saw this happen, but they want to convince us that it did.

Evolutionists contend it’s highly unlikely that two ERVs would be inserted into the exact same spot in both chimps and humans. They say this is virtually impossible. Therefore, in their view, common descent is the only explanation that makes sense.

In contrast, creationists refer to these elements as “created units of DNA function.” In other words, God literally created these elements as necessary for our existence. Donny explains that God “front-loaded DNA” into both animals and people. And if this is true, then they cannot be the remnants of past viral infections. So, how do we demonstrate that these are evidence of God’s design? Well, the answer comes down to functionality. Functionality is what creationists predict, and that’s exactly what we find.

Scientists now know that ERV sequences play an essential role for our survival, such as holding our genome together, packaging chromosomes, anti-viral immune response, tumor suppression, organization of the genome, redundancy, gene regulation, cellular differentiation, and, most importantly, fetal development. There’s no junk in our DNA as they once believed. Instead of being viruses, ERVs protect us from viral infections and enable us to develop from the moment of conception.

In order to rescue evolution, evolutionists respond by claiming that all these functions were coopted through evolutionary processes, but they have no evidence, no data and no studies to back up their claims. There are no examples of a nonfunctional ERV going from nonfunctional to functional in the peer reviewed literature. And without this, their argument is not viable.

Most evolutionists are shocked to learn about such examples functionality in ERVs because it goes against what they were led to believe. It was completely unexpected.

One paper states, “if the accidental infection of a mammalian ancestor by an exogenous retrovirus had never occurred, the placenta and the mammals that produce it, including humans, would never have existed.” This is devastating to evolution. They admit we couldn’t exist without these elements, but they just can’t bring themselves to admit that the only alternative is special creation by God.

One thing I really enjoyed about this video is the great number of peer reviewed sources. The evolutionist’s own studies thoroughly refute evolution over and over.

In addition to this video, Donny wrote The Endogenous Retrovirus Handbook. So please check out the video, and if you need a good resource, consider buying the book.
