Last weekend I watched the documentary The Story of Everything, and I was not disappointed. In fact, it exceeded my expectations. This film sets out to do something valuable: tell the story of the origin of everything- from the birth of the universe to the formation of stars and planets, the emergence of life, and the rise of consciousness.
At its core are some of the most important questions we can ask: Where did everything come from? Are natural forces alone responsible for advanced life and consciousness? Or does God exist, and was it he who designed us?
Beautifully produced and masterfully narrated, the documentary features a lineup of brilliant scientists and thinkers, including Stephen Meyer, John Lennox, David Berlinski, and James Tour. These experts, along with others, tackle the toughest problems facing purely naturalistic explanations for our origins. They show how several foundational questions rooted in the laws of physics remain unanswered… and perhaps unanswerable by materialist science.
For example, while many secular scientists accept the Big Bang as the best explanation for the universe’s beginning, the laws of physics as we know them don’t actually permit it- unless those laws were somehow different in the past. Yet there’s no evidence they ever were. The exquisite fine-tuning of the universe adds even more weight to the case for a Creator. Constants like gravity are set with such razor-sharp precision that even slight variations would make life impossible. As the film makes clear, God’s fingerprints are unmistakably visible across His creation. His existence isn’t just plausible… it can be reasonably inferred from the evidence, and the Bible details this for us.
The documentary also dives into the wonders of the cellular world, where even the “simplest” organisms reveal staggering complexity and intricate design. The discovery that DNA functions as a digital information carrier- a sophisticated code- has left many secular scientists stunned. Information of that quality and quantity simply doesn’t arise from unguided chemical processes.
Lee Strobel poses the central question: “Is there evidence our universe was designed with purpose?” The rest of the film delivers a compelling, evidence-based answer as it carefully examines the data.
The Story of Everything, by Fathom Entertainment, is still playing in select theaters through May 17th, so I highly recommend catching it on the big screen while you can. When it becomes available for purchase, add it to your collection. It’s the kind of film you’ll want to watch again and share with others.
