On the Origin of Dinosaurs and Crocodiles

This article from Phys Org promises to shed light on the origins of dinosaurs and crocodiles, but I would argue, from a creationist perspective, that this extinct reptile is better explained according to the Bible’s mention of created kinds (Genesis 1:24-25).

The author weaves an evolutionary tale in a way that sounds natural, historical, and believable. To many readers, it would go unchallenged. But when we look closely at the details, there is another explanation that fits the evidence without requiring millions of years of unobserved evolutionary change.

A supposedly 240-million-year-old reptile fossil known as Silescelida acristata was discovered in Brazil, and evolutionists suggest it belonged to a group ancestral to dinosaurs and crocodiles. The fossil is classified as an archosauriform, supposedly part of the lineage that later evolved into archosaurs, the group that includes dinosaurs and crocodiles.

But let’s consider the context. The fossil is said to have lived shortly after the Permian-Triassic extinction event, often described as the most severe extinction in Earth’s history. According to estimates, about 81% of marine species and 70% of land vertebrate species disappeared.

The proposed cause is massive volcanic activity that produced enormous flood-basalt deposits. From a creationist perspective, however, the evidence is remarkably consistent with the catastrophic conditions associated with Noah’s global Flood. The Flood would have destroyed animals not preserved on the Ark and devastated marine ecosystems. Vast volcanic activity and rapid burial are exactly the kinds of processes we’d expect during such a global catastrophe.

The article mentions that the extinction event “paved the way” for new reptiles to evolve and diversify into newly available ecological niches. Scientists estimate that Silescelida was about 3.3 feet long and had legs positioned more beneath the body than those of modern crocodiles. What is striking is that this reconstruction is based on only three bones: a left scapula, a right ilium, and a left femur.

Dinosaurs had legs positioned directly under their bodies, while crocodiles have a more sprawled posture. So Silescelida represents an intermediate between the two.

But this raises significant questions. For evolution to be true, major anatomical changes would be required to transform a creature like Silescelida into a true archosaur. These changes would include largescale modifications to the hip socket, femur, hindlimbs, musculature, and overall posture. The hip socket would need to become fully perforated. The femur would require extensive redesign to fit the altered joint structure. Additional skeletal features would need to develop to support a fully erect stance. Beyond that, major changes to the respiratory system would be necessary to support the metabolism associated with many archosaurs.

These are not trivial modifications. They involve integrated systems that must work together. Changing one component without the others would likely reduce functionality or result in death rather than improve it. Highly coordinated changes to bones, muscles, connective tissues, blood supply, nerves, and developmental pathways would be required.

So how does a reptile acquire a fundamentally different respiratory system? How does embryonic development get rewritten so that the new structures form correctly? How would DNA know how to successfully arrange mutations within the genome? How do numerous coordinated skeletal changes arise through unguided mutations? Has anyone ever observed the origin of entirely new body plans or integrated anatomical systems? Is the genome constantly being tinkered with until it finds the right combination within a reasonable amount of time? Who has ever observed these kinds of changes? These are the kinds of questions that need detailed, testable answers.

However, when confronted with such challenges, evolutionists often begin by pointing out that changes wouldn’t happen overnight, but minor changes accumulated over millions of years, would. But such a response is merely a superficial rescue device that offers no substance. Proposing millions of years sounds more like magic or faith than a naturalistic explanation. Empirical, observable and testable evidence is lacking. Adding vast amounts of time does not explain how these changes occurred. Time is not a mechanism. It does not generate new genetic instructions for novel body plans, redesign skeletal structures, or coordinate the development of complex biological systems.

Scientists can point to variation within existing organisms, but demonstrating variation is not the same as demonstrating the origin of entirely new anatomical designs. The fossil record may show extinction and diversity, but it does not demonstrate that one reptile transformed into a completely different kind of animal.

The evolutionists I’ve engaged with aren’t concerned about such details as they are in just having people blindly accept evolution without question. Anyone who questions it just doesn’t understand evolution as much as they do, even though they can’t resolve any of the problems outlined above.

For these reasons, Silescelida acristata does not tell us anything relevant about the origin of dinosaurs or crocodiles unless we first assume that all these creatures share a common ancestor. That assumption is built into the evolutionary interpretation from the beginning. But I think it’s fair to suggest that major differences like these are evidence that these animals do not share a common ancestor.

A better explanation is that Silescelida was simply an extinct reptile with its own unique characteristics. Like many fossils, it displays a unique mix of traits that reflect the diversity of life originally created by God. Similar features among different animals do not necessarily indicate common ancestry; they can just as easily point to common design by a common Creator. God created distinct kinds of land animals during Creation Week, and the global Flood was responsible for the destruction of those not preserved on the Ark. The animals living today are descendants of the created kinds that survived that judgment.
